How to Build Forms in Acrobat 9 Compatible With 6

One frustrating feature of Adobe Acrobat is that with every upgrade the program changes its compression software. This means that PDF files and forms built with newer versions of Acrobat may not be compatible with older ones. However, there is a simple trick to fix your form before you save it so that friends and colleagues using Acrobat 6 can read and fill out your Acrobat 9-created forms.

  1. Open the PDF you wish to turn into an Acrobat 6-compatible form.
  2. Step 2

Select “Start Form Wizard” from the Forms menu.

  3. Step 3

Check the box marked “Start with a PDF document” and click “Next.”

  4. Step 4

Check the box marked “Use the current document” and click “Next.”

  5. Step 5

Follow any additional prompts to complete your form if Acrobat cannot read it automatically. Click “Close Form Editing” when it looks the way you want it to. You can always go back and edit later, if need be.

  6. Step 6

Select “Reduce File Size” from the Document menu.

  7. Step 7

Choose “Acrobat 6.0 or later” from the drop-down compatibility box. Click “OK.”

  8. Step 8

    Save your file.

Tips & Warnings
  • Since later versions of Acrobat compress your PDF files more efficiently, making your form compatible with Acrobat 6 will increase the file size. However, unless your form spans many pages, the difference will be negligible.
